RICA Study Tips

  1. Read the competencies for each domain. Highlight all the reading terms. These are the terms you will need to use in the constructed-responses. An excellent resource to define these terms can be found on the International Literacy Association Website.
  2. Study the document “Put Reading First” as it covers domains 2-5. The difference between phonological awareness and phonics will become clear– both are aspects of word analysis.
  3. Check out the response to the case study on the practice test. The first paragraph identifies a strength, paragraphs 2 and 3 identify a weakness, and paragraphs 4 and 5 both list a strategy and the effectiveness of the strategy. Find evidence on multiple documents for the strength and weaknesses and refer to these in your response.
  4. Take the practice test on the CTC website for each subtest, rather than the 60 item practice test. In this way, you can determine which domains you will need further study. Many students have had success by studying for one subtest at a time.
